As you know, one of my favorite outdoor spaces in my house is my side porch. I’ve shared it many times on the blog. Well, thanks to the help of my friends at Crate and Barrel, this place got a makeover, and I’m excited to share my side porch with you again.Note: I’ve been on the bl for over 12 years. Doing the logging. Of all the “brands in all countries” that I’ve hoped to partner with, Crate and Barrel will always be at the top of my list. It’s one of those “pinch me” moments. It is my honor and pleasure to work with them. As always, thanks for supporting the brands that make this blog possible. As I share this updated outdoor living space with you, I’m going to walk you through suggested steps to create a beautiful and functional outdoor living space. My goal is to inspire, excite and equip you to create the outdoor space of your dreams. I’ve tried my best to link all the great products I’ve used. As always, if I’ve missed something you’re interested in, let me know. All that said, let’s get down to business! Outdoor Living – Start with a beautiful foundation: First, take a look at the newly designed space here! As much as I loved my porch, I was ready for a change. While I wanted the space to be functionally similar to what it is now, I knew I needed a different look. Whenever you create an outdoor living space, the first thing to consider is how you will use it. Need enough space to cook your meals? Do you want an open office? Are you looking for a place to relax? Are you an artist/artist who dreams of creating art outdoors? These are important things to consider. Ultimately, create a space that not only looks good, but one that works for you. I use my porch as a living room and I eat al fresco on my porch so I wanted “more of a porch” where I could relax and unwind. With that in mind, I knew comfortable seating was a must, so I chose the Abaco Outdoor Sofa and Abaco Outdoor Chaise Longue. I’m very pleased with how they look and perform in space. Speaking of comfort, they’ve approved “day naps.” For added comfort and style, I also added some pillows. I used a Cilantro Sunbrella Spectrum Outdoor Cushion and a Mohave Wide Stripe Outdoor Cushion. Speaking of activity, I always need a few tables to place a drink, a book and decorate the street a bit. I used two existing wooden benches and added a ridge side table stool and a crest side table stool. What I love about them is that they can be used as seats if needed! I also decided to add this gray Alfresco II cart to the space because it works so well for me in this area. I like to have a place where I can put drinks and snacks if I have company. Whether I’m serving up a big batch of sangria, a signature margarita recipe, or afternoon tea, this bar cart comes in handy! Also, it’s on wheels so I can move it wherever I want. To ground the entire setup, I laid out a Tavares indoor/outdoor checkered rug. The colors match beautifully with the sofa and chairs and make this porch feel like a room. One last note about creating a beautiful foundation: To be honest, I still have one more change. Did you notice that? I removed the old, rusted and outdated porch railing. It made a big difference to this outdoor living space. I felt like I was in a porch dungeon. I feel like the whole place can breathe now. It’s amazing what such a small (but big) change can do for a space. It is also worth noting that the railing served no real purpose other than to add some architectural interest, as the space was at ground level, and may have helped define the space. To me, the railing looked like a mess. I’m so glad they went, I only wish I had done it sooner. Outdoor Living – Decorate with beautiful plants. I have annuals, landscaping plants, topiaries and more here. Spring plant shopping is one of my favorite things, so I’m a little crazy at best. However, if you have more problems, don’t make life difficult for yourself with less maintenance plants. An important thing to consider about your location is the amount of sunlight it receives. Is your area mostly shaded? Do you have sun all day? Marking these things and purchasing plants that are suitable for these conditions are very important to ensure your plants thrive and survive. Also, if you’re wondering what happened to those little terracotta plants, let me explain. This year I will try to grow coleus topiary. I am very excited about this. In fact, I wrote a blog post about the whole process here. I want you to join me in this fun gardening project. Need new seeders? Crate and Barrel has a great selection of garden planters. I have included a few in my space: Datura Footed Speckle, Nol Small Ribbed indoor/outdoor, and Metal Bird indoor/outdoor. Outdoor Living – Use quirky and vintage furniture. I recently blogged about how to incorporate whimsical and vintage pieces into your decor. I mention this topic a lot because I think it is very important. For me, I like to incorporate some quirky and/or vintage finds into all my spaces. Whether I’m decorating an outdoor living space or a bedroom, this is a must for me. On my porch I placed: an antique bench from David that I use as a large plant stand/bedside table, some old crown-shaped planter baskets and an antique chicken crate that is now a wall decor/planter. These unique and ancient discoveries for many years. This is the most interesting to me. I will continue to change these things periodically. My spaces never end. I even added a new birdbath to my landscaping next to the porch. While not vintage, it adds a unique and fun element to the space. Also, the sound of water is perfect for relaxation. Outdoor Living – Create Magic With Lighting: Last but not least, let’s talk about lighting. If you want to create instant magic for your outdoor living spaces, lighting is a must. Here on my porch, I have several different lighting options: Overhead Lighting: First, I was very happy to finally upgrade the outdoor lighting I had on my porch. My old fixture was barely held on by two rusty screws. Nothing was done for space. This new Caplet Outdoor 3-Light Pendant Light not only adds a touch of modern style, but also plenty of light. In fact, I like to put this light on a dimmer to really set the mood. Now my overhead lighting is not only functional but also stylish. It really adds something special and unique to the area – agree? Candles: Adding a little ambient lighting to your outdoor living spaces is an easy way to create a cozy and welcoming atmosphere. While I’ve loved and used real candles in the past, I’ve recently been getting into the battery-powered variety and would love to try this one as well. Crate and Barrel sells these amazing indoor and outdoor candles and they did a great job here. They give off a lovely warm glow that resembles a real candle. I have used them in many places on my porch.
